About WriteWise
WriteWise is a New Zealand edtech company providing AI-powered tools for NCEA English, making quality feedback and learning support accessible to all students.
I'm Leon Grootscholten, founder of WriteWise, and this is my story:
WriteWise started early in 2025, with an idea, and a passion for education. Throughout the year, hundreds of hours were spent consulting students and teachers to refine our product and make it what it is today.
WriteWise quickly gained recognition by winning the 2025 Velocity Ideas challenge, securing a grant that enabled continued development. This early validation helped accelerate our growth, leading to rapid adoption by schools throughout New Zealand and establishing WriteWise as a trusted tool relied on by students across Aotearoa.
The development of WriteWise is supported by a strong network of teachers, technologists, and business mentors, including Ant Ford, William Montague-Brown, and prominent business leader and entrepreneur Bill Smale.

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is the main national qualification for secondary school students in New Zealand. NCEA English is a core subject that focuses on developing students' reading, writing, speaking, and critical analysis skills through the study of literature, language, and media.
NCEA English is awarded at three levels: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Students usually begin studying for NCEA Level 1 English in Year 11 and continue through Years 12 and 13 (ages 15-18).
